The Inauguration Ceremony of the Beutler Institute was held
The Inauguration Ceremony of the Beutler Institute was held in Xiang’an Campus, Xiamen University on January 17, 2015.It was attended by Dr. Bruce Beutler, 2011 Nobel Prize Winner in Physiology or Medicine, academician of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America and professor of UT Southwestern Medical Center in Dallas, Dr. Chen Zhu, Vice Chairperson of the Standing Committee of the 12th National People's Congress, Chairman of the Chinese Peasants and Workers Democratic Party and academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and President of Xiamen University, Mr. Zhu Chongshi as well as delegates from the partners of the Innovation Center for Cell Signaling Network.
In the welcome address delivered by President Zhu, he highly praised the Institute as a significant attempt to jointly cultivate talents. He believed that under the guidance of Professor Beutler, with top-notch scholars and scientists serving as lecturers, it will sure grow into a cradle for future scientists in Life Sciences.
Prof. Beutler also delivered a speech in which he explained the motto of the Institute “Naturae studere, mente aperta” (study nature with an open mind, meaning without bias) and shared his own thoughts on the purposes of the Institute based on his personal experiences.
The Beutler Institute is affiliated with the Innovation Center for Cell Signaling Network, jointly established by Xiamen University, Zhejiang University, University of Science and Technology of China, Institute of Biochemistry and Cell Biology of Chinese Academy of Science and WuXi AppTec. The first Director of the Institute is Prof. Jiahuai Han.
